The Opportunity

The City of San Gabriel Mission Playhouse is seeking a Playhouse Manager to join its team.  The San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, located in the heart of the historic Mission District, is proud to host a remarkable and eclectic array of productions and events ranging from Western Symphonies to Chinese Opera, from Classical Ballet to Ballet Folklórico, from Jazz to Hip-hop, and some of the best Mariachi bands to colorful Broadway shows.  The Mission Playhouse is seeking a Manager who can work as a collaborative team member and oversee the business and organizational support structure so that artists, administrators, and production staff can work together and produce events of the highest professional value. The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a strong professional background in theater management. The Mission Playhouse is seeking a Manager who can work as a collaborative team member and oversee the work environment and organizational support structure so that artists, administrators, and production staff can work together and produce events of the highest professional value. The ideal candidate will also be adept with research, analysis, report preparation, and public presentations and able to produce high quality staff work with minimal assistance.  The City seeks a candidate who is highly motivated and having a strong work ethic, outstanding communication skills (both written and verbally), empathy and compassion, sound judgement, and interpersonal tact.  The ideal candidate is prepared to work for a full-service City and willing to learn and perform a diverse array of duties.  Most importantly, the ideal candidate will exemplify outstanding public service and the mission of the City of San Gabriel and the Mission Playhouse.

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Community Services & Mission Playhouse Director, the Mission Playhouse Manager plans, schedules, implements, and oversees a variety of events, services, and operational activities; manages the rental calendar; responds to client inquiries and assists potential clients in achieving their desired event goals; conducts walk-throughs with prospective clients; oversees contract negotiations, proposals, invoices, reports, cost estimates, and billing for clients; prepares and monitors the budget for various events and funds that support the operation of the Mission Playhouse; provides supervision and management of assigned staff, including preparing work schedules, determining work procedures, and completing performance evaluations; oversees facility maintenance including capital improvement projects; maintains an effective working relationship with clients, fellow employees, the public, elected officials, other departments and outside agencies; ensures compliance with contracts, City policies and procedures, and relevant regulations and safety codes; assists the Director with grants,  special projects and events; prepares staff reports and makes presentations to the City Council on various event programs and projects; communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Work schedule for this position requires evening and weekend work assignments.

Education & Experience Requirements

Any combination of education and experience may be considered.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • Bachelor’s degree in theatre or arts administration, business administration, or a closely related field.
  • Five years of increasingly responsible experience in marketing or theatre operation of a similar facility, with at least two years of experience in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Local government experience is highly desirable.

License and Certification Requirements

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record are required.
