Independent Shakespeare Co. (Indie Shakes) cultivates a place of belonging for anyone with a curious mind and adventurous heart. Our most visible project is the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival, which welcomes tens of thousands of Angelenos each summer for vibrant, accessible performances of classical plays. The Festival audience is one of the most diverse and exuberant in the City. The late Councilmember Tom LaBonge likened our audience to the crowds at Dodger Stadium (a comparison we wear with pride!)

We also have a 75-seat indoor space where we develop new work, teach classes, perform plays, and host the occasional late-night dance party.

We are seeking a creative Marketing and Content Manager to join our small and mighty team. This individual will play a crucial role in shaping our organization’s brand identity and expanding engagement through imaginative marketing strategies and compelling content.

 

Job Description:

Indie Shakes is in a period of growth! Building on our vibrant programming and strong community ties, we’ve codified an ambitious strategic plan that requires substantial expansion of reach.

We are seeking an assured, creative, and collaborative Marketing and Content Manager. We’re a small, highly communicative team and this position will work closely with the Artistic Director and with the assistance of our consulting design studio, Ligature Creative.

This position brings with it the opportunity to have a profound impact on not just the identity of Indie Shakes but its place within the LA cultural ecosystem. And it offers the opportunity to create (to make art, to write, to be in an environment that values and fosters creativity).

The Marketing and Content Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing marketing and content strategy. This role will involve creating engaging content across multiple platforms (both traditional and digital) and collaborating with staff to ensure an effective and cohesive brand.

Additionally, we are looking for someone who can help drill down on who the Indie Shakes audience is and how we craft messages that engage them in the desired ways. Moreover, because we understand how rapidly the media landscape is fluctuating, we seek someone truly curious about how successful we are in reaching our audience, and flexible in changing course if needed.

We view this role as integral to our creative efforts, and look at this position as part of our creative team.

Indie Shakes uses Notion, Salesforce, Squarespace, and Dropbox.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Marketing Creation and Planning:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies, both programmatic and institutional.
  • Plan and execute digital marketing campaigns via social media and email.
  • Plan and execute content for direct mail and print marketing.
  • Collaborate with the development team to integrate marketing strategies with fundraising and outreach efforts.

Audience Experience:

  • Building marketing campaigns for specific productions and the organization as a whole.
  • Helping plan and execute lobby design for productions: these range from extremely simple to more immersive, depending on the production.

Content Creation:

  • Develop and manage a content calendar to ensure consistent and timely publication of social media posts, e-newsletters, and other digital content.
  • Create original visual and multimedia content that aligns with the Indie Shakes brand and mission.

Digital Marketing and SEO:

  • Assist in keeping the organization’s website and social media profiles energetic and cohesive.
  • Analyze audience behavior and refine marketing strategies.
  • Implement SEO best practices to improve organic search visibility.

Other Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in strategy sessions regarding both marketing and content, but also broader organizational concerns, goals, strategies, and dreams.
  • Represent the organization at events, webinars, and industry conferences as needed.
  • Work closely with the communications, development, and program teams to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging.

  • Is excited by being part of a small, collaborative team, and values creativity.
  • Is excited by being in a learning-centered work environment.
  • Has command of Adobe Creative Suite and Squarespace.
  • Understands that the landscape of a small arts organization is less hierarchical and more prone to shifts than more codified or corporate work environments.
  • Is able to attend weekend and evening events as needed (within reason, and with commensurate time off during the regular work week). Our regular work week is 35 hours: M-F, 10:00 – 5:00.
  • Ability to work in person in Los Angeles.

This is a full-time position. The salary range is $60,000 – $70,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid time off, and sick leave.
