Job Description

Position Summary:

The Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville, TN seeks a Managing Director (MD) to partner with the Artistic Director in leading Clarksville’s oldest professional theatre and its team into a new era, ensuring that the Roxy continues to thrive as an artistic cornerstone of the community and contribute to the city of Clarksville, the area of Middle Tennessee, and the artistic community as a whole. The ideal candidate for Managing Director will bring expertise in the non-profit performing arts field, from strong financial acumen and strategic thinking to a human centric and ethical leadership ethos and a commitment to civic connection. This individual will be able to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks and responding to the needs of others with critical thinking, resolve, and flexibility.

 

Job Description:

The Managing Director and the Roxy’s Artistic Director will form a supportive, collaborative, and encouraging partnership. As a co-partner/leader in the Roxy’s trajectory of increasing artistic achievement and notoriety, the Managing Director will report directly to the Roxy Regional Theatre Board of Directors. Possessing a collective outlook on leading the developmental efforts of the organization, the Managing Director will clarify the Roxy’s primary objectives and drive resource alignment and growth for continuing success. The Managing Director will ultimately oversee all operation functions in the areas of fundraising, audience development, and communication and Human Resources.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Operational Supervision:

  • Create and maintain a relationship of trust, encouragement, collaboration, and joyful exploration with the Roxy’s Artistic Director
  • Develop the annual budget and work with the Artistic Director to develop project budgets as needed
  • Ensure departments adhere to approved budgets
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors and Artistic Director, ensure the long-term financial stability and health of the Roxy Regional Theatre
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a strategic plan with an emphasis on stakeholder feedback
  • Check in regularly with the Artistic Director regarding organizational and artistic vision, mission, and update strategic plans as necessary
  • Work with the Artistic Director to develop the seasonal budget

Board Relations

  • Provide financial leadership and guidance to the Board of Directors, ensuring that board members have information needed to be effective stewards of the organization
  • Work with Board Committee chairs on relevant committees to advance goals of the Roxy
  • Implement the policy and directives of the Board of Directors
  • Serve as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors

Development and Community Engagement

  • Attract new sources of revenue, both through philanthropic fund development and untapped earned revenue options, with an overall goal of increasing the Roxy’s budget in order to remain competitive within the industry
  • Bolster an already supportive culture to keep and attract the best talent working in the professional theatre field
  • Ensure that the Roxy is the leading voice in cultural discussions within the community and is always a significant player in Clarksville’s greater cultural dialogue
  • Complete annual grant applications and seek out new grant opportunities
  • Foster and continue to develop the integrated, collaborative and evolving relationship between the Roxy and Austin Peay State University
  • Work to more deeply define the Roxy as a local, regional, and national source of the highest quality professional theatrical experiences for audiences seeking a diverse palette of plays and musicals
  • Expand the Roxy’s audience and donor base through programs that reach younger people, suburban dwellers, and underrepresented communities
  • Celebrate the Roxy’s mission and vision in new ways that continue to engage long-time supporters, while making room for new constituents
  • Lead fund development efforts from both a contributed and earned income prospective
  • Learn about the philanthropic and patron culture of Clarksville

Marketing

  • Work with the Artistic Director to engage with existing audiences while finding new and creative ways to attract new audiences through artistic programming while staying within budget

General

  • Partner with the Artistic Director to inspire a productive, respectful, collaborative, optimistic, and transparent work environment for all employees
  • Foster, develop, and sustain relationships with arts collaborators, community leaders, schools, and non-arts partner organizations and companies, expanding the Roxy
  • Represent the organization to other organizations, the media, and the public at-large
  • Support and cultivate the local artist community
  • Ensure that the Roxy continues its leadership role locally and nationally
  • Embrace and maintain the Roxy as a place where a diverse group of staff, board, and artists feel inspired to work in a safe and nurturing environment
  • Serve as an open resource to staff for ideas, deliberation, and any conflict resolution
  • Promote a culture of transparency, productivity, balance, creativity, and harmony
  • Attend all staff meetings

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline OR equivalent relevant experience. Advanced degree in theatre, performing arts, or related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possess an authentic love of theatre and adept ability to engage and passionately convey that passion to a wide range of audiences
  • A demonstrated pattern of success in administrative leadership roles requiring a high level of political and managerial dexterity
  • Cultural competency and strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Extensive experience and clear skill in creating, understanding and managing budgets and financial tracking models for each production and season
  • Understanding of how artistic programming and organizational operations work together
  • Strong networker who is comfortable representing The Roxy in the community, business, and civic spheres
  • Experience with and excitement about fundraising
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with donors, institutional funders, and corporations in a way that inspires engagement and financial investment in the work.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, and taking satisfaction in serving as a major public ambassador for the Roxy Regional Theatre’s work
  • Maintain a proactive, solutions-oriented attitude
  • Effective track record of working with boards of directors, volunteers, and other support groups
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary
  • Investment and interest in the Clarksville community and willingness to relocate to the Clarksville area, if not local.

 

Compensation & Start Date

Annual Salary of $60,000-65,000 with benefits such as paid time off, medical, dental, and vision.

Start Date of July 1, 2024
