Position Description

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is hiring for the position of Manager of Institutional Giving, who will be responsible for the company’s institutional fundraising efforts through researching, writing, and submitting grant proposals, and developing and stewarding relationships with institutions of varying types.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing clear, compelling, and timely written grant proposals for foundations, government agencies, and corporate donors to ensure OTSL meets its contributed revenue goals.
  • Writing and submitting all reports to fulfill funding requirements and encourage renewed/increased support from institutional donors.
  • Reading and interpreting organization and project budgets.
  • Coordinating stewardship, solicitation, and cultivation efforts for an assigned portfolio of corporate and foundation donors.
  • Inviting funders to observe programming, initiating appropriate communication with funders regarding proposals or reports, and determining the most effective way to communicate program results at the conclusion of grant periods.
  • Working in partnership with the Senior Manager of Special Events & Strategy to coordinate corporate sponsorship requests for fundraising events.
  • Researching new foundation and corporate prospects, scheduling cultivation visits (involving colleagues as needed for appointments), and evaluating which prospects have the capacity and propensity to support Opera Theatre.
  • Developing and maintaining an annual calendar to ensure all grant applications and related reports are submitted on deadline.



Experience & Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in grant writing or closely related fundraising work, including a demonstrated ability to craft written project narratives and develop project budgets;
  • A knowledge of local and national arts funding sources;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • An ability to build relationships with donors and prospective donors;
  • An understanding of non-profit finance and related reports;
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and a commitment to meeting deadlines;
  • Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheets;
  • Experience with prospect research and donor database software.
  • Interest in the performing arts and opera preferred.


Compensation & Hours

  • Compensation: $55,000-$60,000 annual salary plus benefits.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position.
  • Opera Theatre has a flexible work policy which allows for individual remote and asynchronous work arrangements.
  • Position requires some evening and weekend hours during key times of year.

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization known for innovative productions featuring outstanding young artists.  The company offers a festival opera season each spring which attracts ticket buyers from zip codes throughout the metropolitan area, as well as visitors from nearly 50 states and multiple countries.  As of 2022, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis has presented 33 world premieres and 28 American premieres, which may be the highest percentage of new work in the repertory of any American company. In addition to the spring Festival Season, Opera Theatre operates year-round education and community programs serving nearly 17,000 local children and adults.

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis has a year-round artistic and administrative staff of approximately 40, which grows to nearly 500 during the Festival Season. Several hundred volunteer members of the Opera Theatre Guild provide support for all aspects of Opera Theatre’s work and advocate for the company throughout the greater St. Louis community. The company’s annual budget size is approximately $12 million; contributed revenue represents more than 50% of budget.
