The Department of Human Communication and Theatre offers two relatively independent majors and minors. The Theatre Program offers a BA education that integrates theory and practice. Our annual Stieren Guest Artist program and student-faculty research create opportunities to collaborate meaningfully with diverse theatre professionals. In addition to our facilities, which include a large proscenium theatre, a black box theatre, and a smaller theatre space used primarily for student productions, the Theatre Program has access to the Center for the Sciences and Innovation (CSI) Makerspace, which has CNC routers, laser cutters, and 3D printers to fabricate components of scenery and props.

  • Teach four courses per academic year in Design and/or other areas of technical theatre.
  • Design Lighting and Projection (as needed) for all co-curricular Theatre Program productions.
  • Assist with the execution and implementation of designs.
  • Supervise student workers as applicable.
  • Advise student Lab Show productions (typically 2 per semester) as needed.
  • Seek out, develop, recruit and mentor undergraduate design students.
  • Manage and maintain lighting, sound, and projection equipment.
  • Maintain and adhere to production budget in areas of lighting, sound, and projections.
  • Assist department chair with yearly Capital Equipment and Capital Improvement
  • Requests. Coordinate acquisition and installation of approved items in relevant design areas.
  • Attend all department, theatre, and production meetings.
  • Comply with all Trinity University policies and guidelines.
  • Additional duties as assigned.



This is a full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor of Lighting Design beginning August 2024, with the possibility of renewal.
The salary will be competitive.




  • Terminal Degree in Theatre or related area by the time of appointment.




  • Experience teaching in an undergraduate environment.
  • Evidence of experience in lighting in a variety of theatrical styles
  • Experience with QLab


  • Experience in projection and/or sound design



  • Work is completed in office, theater, and studio environments.
  • Will work under pressure to meet office/project deadlines.
  • Initial design conversations for Fall 2024 mainstage season will begin in summer 2024.
  • Must be able to move about freely.
  • Willingness to travel on behalf of Trinity University.
  • Physical demands are moderate. Most lifting is less than 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to pick up or deliver information to an off-campus office.
