• Salary/Rate: This is a full-time, seasonal position. The sound engineer will receive $840/week ($21/hr).
Position qualifies for overtime after 40 hours worked following federal and state rules.
About the Role:
The A1 Sound Engineer is responsible for executing and maintaining the audio elements of productions at Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Working closely with the Audio Supervisor, Sound Designers, and Production teams, the A1 operates the audio console, programs playback systems, and ensures the integrity of the sound design throughout rehearsals and performances. The A1 Sound Engineer mixes performances, maintains audio equipment and systems, and collaborates with stage management and other departments to support successful productions and events.
Position Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Sound Designers, Directors, Stage Management, and Creative Teams to realize the artistic sound design for each production.
- Program and operate audio consoles, playback systems, and related control software during rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performances.
- Execute live audio mixing for theatrical productions, ensuring consistency and quality of sound design throughout the run.
- Prepare and maintain console files, playback programming, cue structures, and system routing as required.
- Assist with installation, testing, tuning, and strike of sound systems, including loudspeakers, microphones, cabling, and playback equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot wireless microphone systems, including frequency coordination, battery management, and performer support.
- Coordinate with Stage Management and other departments on cueing, rehearsal support, and integration of audio systems with lighting, video, and stage automation.
- Monitor system performance and respond quickly to technical issues during rehearsals and performances.
- Assist with maintaining accurate documentation including system diagrams, patch lists, console files, and cue sheets.
- Participate in load-ins, work calls, technical rehearsals, strikes, and maintenance of A/V equipment.
- Support audio needs for rehearsals, special events, and other organizational programming as assigned.
- Foster and support a safe working environment, including adherence to equipment safety procedures and proper handling of technical equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Attributes:
- Professional experience in live audio mixing for theatrical productions or live events.
- Advanced skill with programming and operating Yamaha digital audio consoles.
- Knowledge of Dante audio networking systems and digital audio distribution.
- Strong working knowledge of QLab and MacOS systems for theatrical playback.
- Advanced knowledge of audio signal flow, microphone techniques, reinforcement systems, equalization, dynamics processing, and time alignment.
- Experience working with wireless microphone systems, including coordination, maintenance, and performer mic’ing.
- Ability to read and interpret sound system documentation, patch lists, and design drawings and to maintain consistency and artistic integrity of sound design throughout a production run.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly in live environments.
- Experience collaborating with stage management, designers, and technical departments in a fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with production staff as well as remain calm, focused, and detail-oriented during live performances.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for working with theatrical sound equipment and backstage environments.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Dante 3 certification.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to effectively communicate by asking informed questions, relaying information to others, and effectively giving and receiving criticism.
- Ability to work well under pressure and respond calmly and efficiently to frequent changes during the production and rehearsal process.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working at height and with climbing stairs and ladders repeatedly.
- Able to sit, stand, and squat for extended periods.
- Work extended hours, nights, and weekends as required.
