Scope of the Job

  • Reporting to: Programme Leader – Dance
  • Responsible for: Dance provision within Undergraduate Programmes
  • Works Closely with: Dance Faculty from various disciplines, Acting and Musical Theatre Faculty and Production Arts Faculty.


Job Purpose

The Lead Dance Tutor is a full-time role, for one term at Sharjah Performing Arts Academy and is responsible for assisting with the logistical programming and innovative practice for all dance and movement related activities at SPAA. The Lead Dance Tutor has a key role in overseeing the dynamic and safe practice within the delivery of dance/movement related teaching. This Lead role requires a skillset in which the candidate has extensive practical experience in their field but also has successful experience of module management, leading assessment/feedback, budgeting and leading a team. They will lead the dance team to work succinctly alongside the other departments within the performance programmes and the wider faculty at Sharjah Performing Arts Academy. The Lead Dance Tutor reports directly to the Programme Leader – Dance and the post is responsible for serving dance/movement provision to all programmes.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting directly to Programme Leader – Dance, and ultimately the Executive Director.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of all current dance courses within SPAA. Safe practice will be at the forefront of practice alongside developing and inspiring innovative teaching which connects with a multidisciplinary training that remains dynamic and relevant to the industry.
  • Through the dance faculty, support the Programme Leader Dance to develop and deliver module assessments with clear progressive feedback for students.
  • Assist with timetabling and schedules for the dance courses.
  • Assist with outreach and audition procedures to maintain high levels within student recruitment.
  • An ability to mentor, manage and share practice and pedagogy.
  • Organise and execute classes in a range of dance styles and techniques, with a clearly defined specialism in at least one genre.
  • The Lead Dance Tutor may be required to undertake additional duties relevant to the running of the team and modules, with specific relation to inspection and validation points across the academic year.


Knowledge and Experience


  • BA Degree and significant experience and/or additional qualifications in professional performing arts education and training.
  • At least 5 years’ experience teaching within a vocational performing arts institution.
  • Must be trained in multiple disciplines, with specialist knowledge and training in one genre.
  • Previous experience in assessment/feedback procedure.
  • Understanding of delivering student assessment and feedback processes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multicultural team, demonstrating both compassion and autonomy.
  • Ability to work on a flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Flexible approach to pedagogy to suit the Academy’s dynamic needs, potential cultural considerations, and to enhance collaborative delivery.
  • Ability to work with students from varying cultural backgrounds and abilities.
  • Energetic, driven, creative and dependable.
  • Openness to adapting and developing practice.

Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) is an independent Academy established by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, to address a growing demand in the UAE and MENA region for formal education and quality professional training in the performing arts sector. SPAA is the only performing arts conservatoire in the Middle East and North Africa region, offering undergraduate and graduate degree programmes taught in English. The purpose-built Academy includes a 432-seat theatre, two fully equipped studio performance spaces, TV/recording studios, twelve sprung rehearsal studios, 12 singing tutorial spaces, resource library, gymnasium and cafe.

Sharjah Performing Arts Academy specialises in training graduates for work in the international professional performing arts industry. The SPAA faculty are highly experienced practitioners within their respective fields. The focus of the Academy is practical rather than academic. The Academy’s primary goal is to equip graduates with the highest level of practical skills in their field, along with the tools necessary for successfully creating their own work or practice.


Salaries and Benefits

Salaries in the UAE are tax-free and disbursed monthly in United Arab Emirates dirhams. Faculty members receive a competitive benefits package that includes: accommodation, private medical insurance, and a residency visa, which extends to cover dependent family members. The Academy will cover the cost of education expenses for eligible dependent children under the age of 18.

Employees and eligible dependents are entitled to an annual return ticket to their home country.
