Job Description

LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 committed to curating site-specific public art exhibitions in Los Angeles and beyond. LAND believes that all people deserve the opportunity to experience innovative contemporary art in their everyday existence, to enhance their quality of life and ways of thinking about their community. In turn, artists deserve the opportunity to realize projects in the public realm, unsupported through traditional institutions. LAND brings contemporary art outside of the walls of museums and galleries, into our shared public spaces and unique sites, in Los Angeles and beyond.

 

The Co-Director & Chief Curator leads the organization by setting and presenting the strategic vision to its founding mission, commissioning innovative contemporary public art projects, in Los Angeles and beyond. This position further ensures that LAND produces ambitious, innovative programming in the form of exhibitions, publications, and programs such as artist talks and symposia. The position works with the current Co-Director to provide leadership and oversight in all non-program areas: strategic partnerships and sponsorships, gallery operations, fund development, board and external relations, program budget management and staff management. The Co-Director & Chief Curator oversees all curatorial decisions as well as –alongside the Co-Director & Curator of Performance– the annual budget, fundraising, marketing, and longer-term strategic goals for the organization.

 

As part of her/his curatorial responsibility, theCo-Director & Chief Curator must develop and monitor annual budgets and project budgets, oversee all concept development and communication with the artist(s), as well as overseeing the production and implementation of the projects, manage exhibitions staff and the physical venue (if applicable), and participate in grant writing and other fund-raising/cultivation efforts.

 

LAND’s Co-Director & Chief Curator will participate in all donor outreach and help ensure established development goals are met. Along with the Co-Director & Curator of Performance, s/he is responsible for cultivating meaningful relationships with constituents, donors, and collectors and serving as a representative of LAND at events and in the public. The Co-Director & Chief Curator acts as liaison between LAND staff and Board, and assists the Board of Directors in managing board-committees and new-member recruitment.

 

TheCo-Director & Chief Curator is primarily responsible for maintaining and increasing the visibility and reputation of the organization in the local, national and international art communities. S/he serves as lead ambassador and spokesperson in promoting LAND’s mission and objectives and articulating its philosophy, vision, and strategy for implementing that mission.The Co-Director & Chief Curator shall demonstrate and maintain professional fluency in contemporary art on a national and international basis, as her/his duties require extensive interaction with artists, art colleagues, the Board of Trustees, community committees, venues, staff, institutional and individual donors.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

A highly functioning arts executive with a minimum of seven years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities required, and, preferably, an MA or PhD in a related field.  In addition, the ideal candidate will also possess the following characteristics:

  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity as key strategies toward broad-based institutional excellence, representing a range of perspectives, thought, and actions;
  • Deep knowledge of contemporary art, coupled with an active network of artists, scholars, and curators in the field;
  • Experience building relationships with artists and facilitating their work and vision
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, work effectively with a board, build internal and external support;
  • Demonstrated ability to forge mutually respectful, trusting, and effective relationships with a diverse group of staff, Board members, faculty, community leaders, and decision makers;
  • Demonstrated success in attracting and working with artists and scholars to create dynamic and innovative programs
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; presence and credibility to serve as an effective spokesperson for the Institute locally, nationally, and internationally.

 

The successful candidate should also be:

  • A passionate and sophisticated advocate for the arts, personally and professionally committed to the mission, objectives, and programs of LAND;
  • A persuasive and articulate communicator who is able to connect with a broad spectrum of people in a meaningful way;
  • Able to maintain balance and perspective, and a proactive “can-do” attitude that can inspire others;
  • Unflappable in the face of multiple demands; pragmatic, grounded, authoritative, decisive and disciplined; mentally flexible and creative as circumstances demand;
  • An honest negotiator and true collaborator for whom all sides maintain trust and respect and works successfully in close partnership with institutional colleagues.

Compensation – $80,000 – $100,000
