Job Description

Position: The faculty member (in this position) will teach 18 credits per year (three courses per semester) with a minimum of two courses each semester within the FYE course sections. These course sections include classes that are theme-based studio practice, design, media, fabrication, and drawing.

The position is specifically for a faculty appointment in Social Practice with local, national, and/or global reach. The successful candidate will help advance and diversify MICA’s FYE curriculum and serve the socially conscious first year student population. The faculty member is also expected to demonstrate digital fluency in practice and teaching with a particular focus on design, new media, or immersive technology in order to teach studio and media courses across the first-year program. Those active in community engagement, art activism, or social design are all encouraged to apply.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose social practice intersects with our college’s Diversity Equity Inclusion Globalization (DEIG) goals and help foster creative citizenship in our students. The successful candidate will demonstrate familiarity with, and interest in teaching on an international campus, embracing interculturalism in education and inclusive pedagogy.

In addition to teaching, all full-time faculty are expected to pursue research and professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the first-year program and the college. Faculty are also required to meaningfully contribute to curricular development, faculty governance including peer evaluation, committee service, institutional service, and scheduled student-centered activities and events.

Requirements:

  • MFA degree (or terminal degree in respective fields)

  • Demonstrated active social practice in portfolio such as community engagement, art activism, or social design

  • Demonstrated capacity and enthusiasm for teaching studio classes and students in first year at the undergraduate level

  • Demonstrated digital fluency in practice and teaching with a particular focus on design, new media, or immersive technology

Preferred Qualification:

  • 3 years of higher education teaching experience beyond graduate internships/assistantships

  • Demonstrated interculturalism in education and inclusive pedagogy (in teaching portfolio and/or practice portfolio)

  • Demonstrated collaboration with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, education levels and degrees of professional training

Start Date: August 2022

Salary: Commensurate with experience and college policy. Excellent benefits package.

-a Social Practice Portfolio of 20-25 images and a Teaching Portfolio of 15-20 images focused on student work. Up to 5 URLs may be submitted additionally with expected screening time to be no longer than 15 minutes in total.
