Job Description

We are looking for a creative leader, someone to help direct the gallery through its next phase of its growth – a Director who can both expand the curatorial footprint and strengthen the ongoing relationship with the gallery’s clients through the use of technology while still maintaining the existing high level of arts education through programming such as artist talks, lectures, informative catalogs, artist films, wall labels, and docent programs.

 

Responsibilities

Business Management

  • Supervise gallery operations and current gallery staff of three, and four-to-six contractors, including sales associates, registrar-art handler, public relations and social media, graphic designer, art writers, framer, and bookkeeper
  • Set gallery priorities, and provide leadership to reach or exceed sales targets
  • Drive special growth initiatives including evaluation and possible introduction of a new client relationship management system (CRM)
  • Provide oversight of the gallery’s affiliate frame shop
  • Work with owner/Finance Director to develop and manage annual sales budget, and to identify key areas of growth and savings
  • Manage the job descriptions and workflow of the team
  • Cross-train the team on different responsibilities and tasks for greater efficiency and coverage

Sales

  • Provide vision and leadership on implementing initiatives and a go-to-market strategy to expand revenue streams during prime seasons and off-seasons, with the goal of meeting and exceeding sales targets
  • Mentor and provide inspiring training for staff in all aspects of art sales and art education
  • Evaluate and implement a strategy for staying in touch with out-of-town clients and for generating passive sales

Curatorial

  • Provide visionary leadership to expand the gallery’s regional and national artists
  • Demonstrate a strong foundation in art history and in-depth knowledge of both contemporary artists and the US art world
  • Manage the staff for all exhibitions and arts education programming
  • Write and oversee development of catalogs and informative labels
  • Proven ability to organize exhibitions, and liaise with artists, writers and designers

Brand Management, Public Relations and Social Media

  • Be an active member of the local arts community, networking and attending important local events, such as openings and mixers to maintain professional community relationships and represent the gallery through interacting with local artists and arts institutions
  • Implement a strategy for providing excellent client services that will exceed their expectations
  • Oversee the PR and social media campaigns which promote the gallery and its artists
  • Collaborate and partner with local festivals and events

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Proven ability to organize exhibitions, and liaise with artists, writers and designers
  • Previous experience in a similar role in the art industry
  • Demonstrated sales leadership and successful gallery management
  • Experience with CRM systems
  • Experience with web-based art platforms
  • Excellent English communications skills, both written and spoken
  • Experienced in dealing with valuable art and high net-worth clients
  • Must be highly organized, self-motivated, an excellent mentor
  • Strong network of established contacts within the region and national art scene
  • Proven ability to work with artists of all caliber, nurture their careers and gently push back on their demands when necessary
  • Knowledge of best practices in fine art gallery management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • An affable, accessible personality, typical of the friendly Colorado culture
  • Genuinely, enthusiastic about art, with a proven sales record
  • Knowledge of fine art gallery best practices
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus (also German or French)
  • Grammar nerd
  • Experience overseeing design projects, catalogs and web-publishing projects
  • Previously published art writing, catalog essays or arts education text
  • Private or corporate art advisory experience
  • Knowledge of, and representation of artist designed studio jewelry
  • Knowledge of frame shop business and framing practices
  • Prior experience and knowledge of the artists in the gallery’s stable is a plus

EDUCATION

MFA in Art, MA in Art History, Arts Management, or Arts Administration strongly preferred, or a BA in art or related subject, plus extensive art world experience
