NNU Department of Music offers degrees in Bachelor of Arts, Music Education, Applied Music Emphasis, Worship Arts, Musical Theatre and Commercial Music. Music majors engage in a full complement of theory, history, methods and applied coursework. NNU students participate in a variety of ensembles and private study with faculty members and professional musicians from the Treasure Valley, including members of the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra which performs monthly on campus. The Department of Music also offers an iMac-based Center for Digital Media along with a recently renovated recording studio. On campus performances are held in our outstanding Brandt Center’s 1500 seat hall, along with intimate recital halls. Our ensembles perform frequently, traveling locally, throughout the Northwest, and internationally. NNU has a wonderful array of pianos in practice rooms and performing halls and is moving towards the completion of the All-Steinway School designation.
Position Description
The Department of Music at Northwest Nazarene University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position as the Technical Director for the Musical Theatre program. The Technical Director has the responsibility for the technical operations of NNU productions, including design and execution or oversight of all technical elements, as well as coordinating necessary maintenance. We seek a creative, passionate, and inspiring artist and colleague to join our faculty at NNU.
Essential Functions
- In conjunction with the Director of Theatre, designs and determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances in advance of production dates.
- Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
- Ability to work with others to creatively overcome obstacles and challenges that arise within productions.
- Teach courses in technical theatre as needed within the curriculum.
- Oversight of set and stage construction and management, therefore must have a knowledge of tools and equipment needed.
- Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer technical staff for individual shows, including orienting them on safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations.
- Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and tools; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Consults with the Director of Theatre and Dean on the preparation and control of production budgets.
- Maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
- Monitors Tech Week rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting of the show.
- Makes recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
- Attends production strike at close of the run of the show.
- Foster collegial relationships within the department through attending department events, meetings, and concerts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proven record of effective teaching.
- Five years of experience in theatrical productions.
- This experience should demonstrate thorough understanding of all aspects involved in technical theater, including construction, lighting equipment, rigging and sound. (Most technical directors have one or two areas of expertise but can function well in any role.)
- People and time management skills.
- Demonstrated expertise developing “safety” culture, procedures, and protocols.
- Effective mentoring and collaboration skills that can serve a diverse range of students that contributes to their development as professional artists and citizens of the world.
- The University requires that all candidates have a Christian perspective (preferably in the Wesleyan tradition), and must be comfortable with and in agreement with the mission and lifestyle values of NNU.
Preferred Qualifications
- Terminal degree in Technical Theatre from an accredited university, but extensive experience as a professional in the field may be considered in lieu of a terminal degree.
- An established performance profile.

Salary will be determined by the educational background and experience.
