Job Description

The Workhouse Arts Foundation, Inc. (WAF) is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation with a mission to operate the Workhouse Arts Center (opening in 2008) with programs in the visual arts, performing arts, arts education, and history through the repurposing of the former Workhouse correctional facility. WAF’s budget is currently $3 million annually.

Summary Statement:
The Education Coordinator provides administrative support for the Education Program’s camps, classes, workshops, Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative, and community engagement initiatives. This position is essential in providing excellent student and customer service experiences that foster and expand engagement. The Coordinator also provides direct support to the Director of Education to support the current and future education initiatives at the Workhouse Arts Foundation, Inc, (WAF). Located in Lorton, VA, the WAF is a non-profit dedicated to providing outstanding visual and performing arts, arts education, history programs and the Lucy Burns Museum, all in a unique historic setting. In this role, the Education Coordinator will represent the WAF professionally on-site and with community partners, including Fairfax County, the owner of the site.


Role and Responsibilities:

  • Enter classes, camps, and workshops in Tessitura; manage registrations; and reconcile financial transactions; assist customers over the phone or in-person.
  • Coordinate camp calendar, teaching artist schedules, as well as class information for teaching artists; ensure completion of hiring packets for teaching artists, Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative instructors, and camp counselors; ensure completion of enrollment forms for camps, classes, and workshops; serves as point of contact for camp participants’ parents and guardians.
  • Prepare and submit requests for financial transactions to Director of Education, including payment requests; prepare financial reports for grant reporting; contribute to yearly budget proposal process.
  • Coordinate logistics for Workhouse Military in the Arts sessions, classes, camps, youth tours, field trips, birthday parties, and privately booked workshops, including scheduling classrooms, counselors, and instructors, and purchasing supplies and refreshments.
  • Coordinate content for monthly e-newsletter, webpage, and social media platforms.
  • Maintain cleanliness of classroom spaces and operation of equipment, as well as public spaces in the building. Conduct classroom and supply inventories at the start of each new quarter.
  • Coordinate logistics for Education Open House, Camp Open House, and Education fairs.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor or Associates degree from an accredited college or university. Experience in Visual & Performing Arts and/or Education preferred.
  • Experience working with Military communities, service members, and families is a plus.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in registration and/or scheduling in a dynamic office environment.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with emphasis on phone and person-to- person communication.
  • Computer competencies in Adobe, Microsoft Office products, Tessitura, and Canva.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, exercise initiative and independent judgment.
  • Work week will be Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, with some evening and weekend work as required.


Satisfactory completion of this job will be evidenced by excellent attention to detail, anticipation of financial need, exercising sound professional judgement, meeting financial goals, building and maintaining good working relationships with staff, artists and other colleagues, keeping excellent records, and working well as a team member, and by operating within the Workhouse approved budget.

$35,000 – $45,000 annually, with a benefit package that includes a health/dental insurance plan, a retirement plan, paid time off, and other employee benefits.

Additional Notes:
The Workhours for this position are a function of work and support requirements and directed by the President/CEO. The Workhouse business hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
