Job Description

The Education and Outreach Director leads BHCT’s Education and Outreach program whose mission is to cultivate creativity, collaboration, and empathy in students and community members of all ages. The position reports directly to the Executive Director of BHCT, supervises a part-time education assistant, and works in collaboration with the Artistic Director and other BHCT staff.

The E&O Director operates and oversees all education and outreach classes and programs of BHCT:

  • The Cherry Street Players, semester long educational classes for youth ages 7-14, leading to two fully produced plays (Fall and Spring)
  • The Well Done Players, BHCT’s troupe of older actors who perform outreach performances and two annual showcase performances per year
  • Summer Theater Camps
  • The Broken Lemons playwright group;
  • In-school workshops and residencies in public and private schools
  • Other special workshops for youth and adults

 

Primary responsibilities:

  1. Direct and produce the Cherry Street Players
    • Schedule and teach the semester long program culminating in a final production
    • Create classes and lesson plans
    • Direct Cherry Street Players productions in an organized, artistic and professional manner
    • Arrange all educational materials and equipment needed for classes, rehearsals and performances
    • Recruit guest artists to work with class participants
    • Communicate with students and parents through e-mail and letters to keep them informed of schedules of classes, rehearsals and performances
    • Maintain accurate records of registration and tuition payment for all classes
  2. Design and implement classes and workshops for children and adults in a variety of theatrical disciplines
    • Work in collaboration with the BHCT Artistic Director and other staff to develop workshops
    • Teach and/or recruit instructors for workshops.
  3. Lead & direct the Well Done Players
    • Run weekly meeting/rehearsals
    • Provide materials to read and discuss at weekly meetings
    • Direct and coach two showcase performances per year
    • Schedule outreach performances, write/compile scripts, and coach the ensemble
  4. Support and organize the Broken Lemons Playwriting Group
    • Schedule and attend meetings every other week
    • Provide information on submission opportunities
    • Facilitate performance showcases of Broken Lemons works
  5. Build relationships with & provide workshops and residencies for area schools
  6. Recruit and supervise volunteers to help with education productions, including set building, costume making, running crews and promotion of shows
  7. Create written copy for all productions for: Media releases, Show Posters, newsletters, playbills and other related marketing literature
  8. Provide bookkeeper with detailed records of income and expenses for Education & Outreach programming
  9. Participate in administrative and promotional activities related to BHCT’s Educational and Outreach promotions
    • Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets
    • Serve as BHCT representative and guest speaker for school or civic functions as requested by the BHCT Executive or Artistic Directors
  10. Actively participate in fundraising efforts for Education and Outreach Programs including:
    • Helping organize fundraising events in conjunction with Cherry Street Players plays.
    • Researching grant and sponsorship opportunities for Education and Outreach activities.
    • Assisting Executive Director with grant applications, primarily by writing application narratives about Education and Outreach programs
  11. Serve on BHCT’s Education and Outreach committee
  12. Other duties as assigned by the BHCT Executive Director

 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. A Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in Theatre (an education degree is highly desirable), plus 2-3 years of experience working with young people in a theatrical and/or educational setting – OR – equivalent combination of education and experience in theatre with an emphasis on experience working with young people
  2. Experience teaching theatre classes at a variety of age levels
  3. Ability to create a safe learning environment using excellent and age-appropriate classroom management techniques
  4. Ability to manage large groups of people effectively
  5. Stage Direction experience and a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, including set, lighting or sound design/production
  6. Enthusiasm for community theatre and helping children and adults learn and grow
  7. Strong interpersonal communication, customer service, time management and organization skills
  8. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and on-going projects to achieve the highest standards within the time, human resource and budgetary constraints available
  9. Strong computer skills including MS Word and Excel, or equivalent

 

Compensation:
The Education and Outreach Director is a full-time position with a salary between $33,000-$36,000, commensurate with experience. BHCT has a group health plan.
