The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) seeks an inspired, supportive, and collaborative leader to assume the role of Dean of the School of Dance. UNCSA is North Carolina’s only university devoted exclusively to training talented students to become top-in-their-field professional artists. With a dance school ranked among the very best in the country, UNCSA seeks a Dean for the School of Dance who is deeply committed to a conservatory model of dance education, is unequivocally invested in both ballet and contemporary dance disciplines, and brings a track record of artistic excellence, vision, and innovation. This leader will have strong industry networks and connections nationally and internationally and will intimately understand the diverse and evolving needs of today’s various art industries. This Dean will also have a strong desire to work with faculty, staff, students, and guest artists to further enrich artistic and academic environments, bringing an enthusiasm for supporting the next generation of artists. Finally, the incoming Dean will optimize the School of Dance’s existing assets and help shape and drive a strategic vision for its next chapter, engaging faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the larger UNCSA community in these efforts.
Founded in 1963 as America’s first public arts conservatory, UNCSA has since developed a well-deserved international reputation. Located within Winston-Salem’s vibrant visual and performing arts community, UNCSA provides gifted emerging artists with the experience, knowledge, and skills necessary to excel in their disciplines and professional and personal lives. UNCSA enrolls more than 1,300 students across its five arts schools, which include the schools of Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music, as well as the undergraduate Division of Liberal Arts and the High School Academic Program.
The School of Dance is an integral member of the UNCSA community, and its unique conservatory approach to teaching and training develops technically sound, artistically sensitive, and stylistically versatile dancer-artists. This approach is taught at the high school and undergraduate levels, with an affiliate Preparatory Dance program for rising 3rd to 9th graders in ballet. The School of Dance enrolls 118 high school students, 126 undergraduate (BFA) students, and 77 preparatory students that engage in studies in classical ballet and contemporary dance. The School also offers summer dance intensives and dance festivals for individuals ranging from children to adults. The program has a reputation for offering a hands-on and intimate learning setting between teachers and students.
Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean of the School of Dance will be a respected artist and leader in the field of dance who will build on the strong reputation of the School. The Dean will articulate an organizational vision for the future that prioritizes training, innovation, inclusion, diversity, collaboration, and unity. This Dean will strengthen and deepen the synergy between classical ballet and contemporary dance disciplines; will work closely with faculty, staff, and students to deliver exceptional education, training, and support services to students; will increase and diversify the School’s financial resources; and will be a key champion for the School of Dance while simultaneously serving as an exceptional ambassador for the UNCSA. This leader will work in partnership with the University to deepen the School’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts and will also be expected to develop partnerships across the UNCSA community and throughout the artistic and creative industries nationally and internationally.
