Position Summary:

The Metropolitan Opera seeks a USA 829 Scenic Designer, or candidate willing to join the union, with experience working on large scale theatrical productions in both studio and stage settings. The Met design office offers a full range of assistance to contracted creative teams, including sketching, drafting (2d and 3d C.A.D.), assembling drawing packages, and model building.  Design development work is continuous year-round, with 4-5 productions at various stages of development simultaneously.  Responsibilities extend through the construction phase in collaboration with in-house and outside technical designers and fabrication shops.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Primarily, the work of the assistant will involve creating complete design drawing packages for new Met productions based on our outside designer’s preliminary drawings, models and/or sketches in consultation with the principal designer, Staff Scenic Designer, and in-house Lighting Design/Production Engineering offices. Particular attention will be paid to formatting the AutoCad drawings in a way that is unique to the Met and prepared for subsequent work by various internal stakeholders.
  • Additional responsibilities will include coordinating production properties selection, graphics work, repertory documentation upkeep, and general assistance to the staff scenic designer in the performance of all department functions.

Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • Candidate must be capable of delivering complete production scenic design information with minimal supervision.
  • AutoCad 2d/3d mastery required, additional experience with graphics, 3d modeling, and rendering software a plus. (Revit, 3DS Max, Cinema 4d, etc.)
  • Rotating repertory experience preferred.
  • Degree in Scenic Design, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong analytical ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Computer skills including but not be limited to Excel and Word.
  • Understanding/familiarity with theatrical construction and scenic art operations.

Physical Demands:

  • The Metropolitan Opera is a performance venue that requires employees working in the building to be fully vaccinated. Due to the nature of this role, you must be fully vaccinated at the time your employment is scheduled to start.

  • Frequently required to use repetitive hand motion and to stand, walk, reach, bend
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 20 pounds.
