Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor/ Draper

Job Description
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Costume Shop Supervisor, the Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor/Draper assists in the operations of the shop to meet production timelines and budgets, oversees maintenance of all physical spaces used by the costuming area, manages the costume stock, and assists with the draping, construction, and pulling of costumes. A typical 14-week semester includes three mainstage productions, three studio productions, and class-based and student-led performance projects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drape and direct the construction and/or alteration of costumes.
- Coordinate communication between staff, students, faculty and guest artists.
- Schedule costume fittings with Stage Management.
- Coordinate costume load in/out with Wardrobe Supervisor.
- Schedule and manage daily work assignments for student workers.
- Maintain a clean and organized shop space; teach and enforce best practices to promote a safe working environment.
- Work proactively and cooperatively with other technical teams to ensure successful productions.
- Attend load-ins, technical and dress rehearsals, performances and strikes as scheduled, including evenings and weekends.
- Partner with the Costume Shop Supervisor to address and troubleshoot issues that may arise and propose appropriate solutions.
- Assist the Costume Shop Supervisor and students with paperwork maintenance and the costume show bible for the supported department productions.
- Maintain essential records and files as needed.
- Assist in the training and development of student designers.
- Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for student designers and student technical workers.
- Assist in the production needs and daily operations of the costume shop.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience in Costume Shop Management or related field.
- Proficiency in draping, flat patterning, and pattern making
- Familiarity with period and modern construction methods; structured garments, bias, and stretch garments
- Working knowledge of costume construction related disciplines including flat patterning, draping, cutting, costume fitting procedures and etiquette, alteration techniques, machine sewing (industrial and domestic), hand sewing, costume construction materials such as fabrics, interfacing, closures and other notions, and safe use and maintenance of costume shop machinery
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Experience, ability and commitment to creating a working environment that is supportive, open, and respectful
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED:
- Experience in an educational production environment with a student mentorship component.
- Experience with costume crafts, dyeing/painting, tailoring, and millinery tools and methods.
- General understanding of current best health and safety practices within the US Theatre Industry.
