Job Description

WOFFORD COLLEGE is seeking a Technical Director for the Department of Theatre. This will be the department’s first season in the new Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts, a state-of-the-art facility that is home to both theatre and visual arts. The Center for the Arts includes a 320-seat proscenium theatre, a 75-seat black box theatre, classrooms and offices, in addition to extensive gallery, museum, and studio spaces. The Technical Director takes a positive leadership role to help create and support a producing environment that is artistically visionary, professional, efficient and safe. The Technical Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the realization of set, lighting, sound and video designs; supervision and training of work-study/student crews; management and maintenance of the scene shop, storage spaces and the theatres, including equipment repair/replacement; and attendance as needed throughout technical rehearsals, performances and strike. Currently the Department of Theatre produces two main stage shows, one black box production, a student-directed and produced show during January Interim (minimal Technical Director support) and regularly occurring special events such as acting, directing and devised theatre class productions (minimal production). Skills required: rigging, wood and metal fabrication, CAD, automation/motor control, sound and lighting installation and operation, interest and ability to work with students, maintaining a cooperative work environment. Teaching opportunities (Stagecraft, etc.) may exist depending on level of education. The Technical Director is expected to be part of a team of dedicated theatre artists who provide a model of professionalism and artistic integrity to all students. A BA in theatre is required, MFA or equivalent professional experience is preferred.
