Job Description

The Department of Fine Arts Programming at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSB/SJU) invites applications for the full-time (92%), benefit-eligible position of Technical and Event Services Manager. This position works with the Operations Staff to manage the technical support of a variety of events in Fine Arts Programming spaces and oversees event services (including audience, front of house, and artist needs). This position supervises and schedules front of house student employment for a staff of (20) and coordinates with box office staff. This position will coordinate both Front of House and technical needs for all music department performances. This position provides event support with night, weekend, and summer commitments. When possible, this technician and the Technical Director will together provide sound and lighting experience.

Responsibilities:

Technical Support of Events
•Manage the sound/lighting for events in coordination with Technical Director and Production Manager.
•Administers the review of event requests to coordinate the meeting of all special needs for events.
•Services all technical support needs in collaboration with the Technical Director.
•Supervise and lead the technical event staff for students and outside vendors.

Event Services
•Oversee front of house/audience services for Fine Art Series events and FAP hosted events.
•Supervise Front of House event staff, both students and volunteers.
•Host artists and coordinates hospitality on Fine Arts Series events.
•Advance FOH details for all music and theatre department performances and assist with any technical aspects of events needed in consultation with the FAP Operations Team.
•Responsible for coordination and quality of support to Music Department performances. Builds relationship with music department to assist with their technical needs.

Student Employee Management
•Supervises student Front of House employees (15+); including hiring, scheduling, assigning work, ensuring adequate training, mentoring, coaching, and serving as the primary contact for job related details.
•Works closely with the Event Team to promote student employees into leadership roles.
•Provides leadership training and professional learning opportunities for student personnel through meetings, direct supervision and performance appraisals.
•Support the training of student technical staff on the safe and proper operation of technical equipment.
•Train FOH Staff in crowd management and emergency procedures.
•Coordinates Department-wide Student Employee Appreciation events and efforts, as well as recruitment efforts.
•Manage the Front of House student employment budgets and monitors work awards.

Other Responsibilities
•Advise Production Manager / Director of Operations of needed repairs to spaces and/or equipment in the Benedicta Arts Center and Stephen B. Humphrey Theatre and assist in repair and upkeep as needed.
•Provide transportation to students, equipment, and artists as needed.
•Performs other duties as required by the Fine Arts Programming Department or supervisor.

Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s Degree in applicable field, and/or considerable professional experience.
•Ability to withstand long hours of concentrated physical activity.
•Ability to work in catwalks, on grids and on ladders.
•Ability to assist with touring company load-ins, load-outs and performances.
•Passion and enthusiasm for the performing and visual arts.
•Demonstrated knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of technical equipment; lighting, sound, rigging, and media equipment, etc.
•Instructional and teaching skills; ability to train and work with student workers, most of whom have little or no experience.
•Supervisory skills; ability to supervise student workers in their tasks, allowing them to learn by doing.
•Public relations skills; to promote a positive image of the colleges.
•Experience working in an academic environment with student employees highly desirable.
•Ability to deal effectively with a variety of personalities and skill levels.
•Problem-solving skills.
•Adaptability and flexibility.
•Valid Minnesota Driver’s license.
•Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
•Excellent computer skills including AutoCAD or Vectorworks; Microsoft Office.
•Professional touring experience desired.
•I.A.T.S.E. member or experience with I.A.T.S.E. crews a plus.
