Part-Time Job Suzuki Group Cello Instructor
Merit School of Music seeks a highly-qualified candidate for the position of Suzuki Group Cello Teacher to teach up to five hours of classes per week. Classes are held at Merit’s Joy Faith Knapp Music Center and at El Valor’s Guadalupe Reyes Center in the Pilsen neighborhood. This is a part-time position starting no later than Wednesday, October 5. The successful candidate may be considered for additional teaching opportunities in Merit’s Private Lessons Program.

The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success.
Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 5,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members.
Merit has an annual operating budget of $6 million, of which nearly half is supported by contributed revenue.

The Group Cello Teacher reports to the Director of Programs, Education and Community Partnerships.
Responsibilities of the Group Cello Teacher are, but are not limited to:
Teach up to two hours of group classes each week to beginners through high intermediate level. Ages range from 4 to13 years old depending on class level.
Prepare students for performances two to three times per year (dependent on level)
Follow Merit’s scope and sequence of learning objectives
Attend Merit faculty meetings and departmental meetings
Other projects as assigned
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Demonstrated success teaching cello to beginners and young students
Demonstrated success teaching in a group learning environment of up to 6 students and parents
Ability to communicate effectively and work well with Merit staff and partnering leadership
Punctual, professional and collegial
Suzuki training is not required but highly desired
Bachelor’s degree in music education, music performance or commensurate experience
10/5/17 through 5/16/18, Wednesdays from 5:00pm – 6:55pm
$49.00 per hour for classes held at Merit’s main campus (38 S. Peoria St.)
