Job Description

The Susan and John Hess Family Theater at the Whitney Museum of American Art serves as both a presenting and ancillary space for all Whitney based programming. A multipurpose venue, the Hess Theater is home to a wide array of performances, exhibitions, educational and family based programs, film screenings, lectures, and corporate rentals. Under the umbrella of Visitor Services the theater team collaborates with all internal departments and external event support as needed.

Production Interns will aid in the technical and administrative support in the daily operations of this downtown arts venue. Applicants should possess fundamental abilities in theatrical lighting (ETC, ION a plus); with a desire to learn more about the intricacies of working in a multi genre performance art space. The level of responsibility entrusted to the Whitney Museum of American Art interns requires they be mature, self-reliant, good communicators, and are able to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment. Flexibility (weekend and evening work to be expected) and interest in a career in performance art production are a must. Should have the ability to lift 50lbs and be comfortable working at height. Those currently pursuing degrees in theatrical production/design or with prior production event experience are encouraged to apply.

Highlights of the Whitney Museum’s Summer Internship Program:

• $5,000 stipend for full participation
• Program dates: Monday, June 5th through Friday, August 4th
• Weekly speaker series featuring curators and other museum professionals
• Field trips to other cultural institutions
• Regular employee discounts at the Museum restaurants and retail store, invitations to exhibition openings, and free admission to most New York City museums
• Interns assigned to a specific museum department for the duration of the program
• Interns required to spend a portion of their time working with Museum visitors
