POSITION: Properties Artisan
REPORTS TO: Properties Master
JOB TYPE: Seasonal approx mid-July- end of April, hourly with overtime after 40, potential to renew contract
BENEFITS: Health Insurance, 401k
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The Properties Artisan is responsible for the construction and or upholstering of soft props. Must have the ability to plan and execute construction, painting, and/or finishing of various props as assigned by the Props Master / Assistant Props Master.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ability to read, interpret, and build from designer drawings as assigned by Properties Master
Ability to interpret and build from sketches, photos, video, or other media as assigned by Properties Master.
Working Knowledge of upholstery and sewing techniques
Inform Properties Master of shop material needs in a timely fashion.
Purchase or rent props as necessary at the direction of the Properties Master.
Participate in props/scenic transfers to and from warehouses, theatres, and rehearsal halls as needed.
Touch up, repair, and maintenance of soft goods and paper items.
Refurbishment and replacement of props from storage as directed by the Properties Master.
Build or source stock items and mock-ups for rehearsal if needed.
Participation in all show load-ins and strikes, as well as tech and previews, with the expectation of working occasional evenings and weekends.
Work in a safe, efficient, and organized manner.
Any other tasks as requested by Properties Master
Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theatre or related field.
3 years experience in properties preferred.
Understanding of basic scenery and period styles.
Ideal candidate will have a wide range of props artisan skills including:
Hand and machine stitching, leather work, fabric crafts
Paper goods: books, newspapers, graphics and construction
Fabric dying, and aging
Period furniture and drapery styles
Furniture refinishing, faux finishes and painting techniques
Mold making and casting
Working knowledge of Photoshop, comfortable working with different printer styles and layouts
Strong organizational skills
Positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative manner.
A willingness to adhere to appropriate safety procedures.
