Full-Time Job Professor of Design/ Technical Director of Theater
The Professor of Design/ Technical Director will be responsible for all technical aspects of Department of Theater mainstage, as well as provide support for blackbox and student productions. Primary responsibilities will include set and lighting design for mainstage shows, building of set, supervising load-in/ load out of sets to off-campus theater, hanging and programming of lighting, and executing sound needs. The TD will also be responsible for the cleaning, maintaining and purchasing of all theater equipment for all performance, rehearsal, and shop facilities. Working with the Artistic Director of the program, they will be responsible for designing or locating designers for additional production needs when applicable (sound, props, projection, etc). In addition the TD will oversee purchasing materials, working with vendors, production schedules, and managing student labor. The ideal candidate will possess an MFA in theatrical stage or lighting design and be able to teach Stagecraft and design courses when in rotation.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of drafting and carpentry.
• Professional experience as a designer
• Ability to translate blueprints into lumber orders and construction plans.
• Knowledge of theatrical lighting instrumentation, sound technologies and scenic construction.
• Ability to repair lighting instruments, shop tools and sound equipment
• Knowledge of theatrical software, including Vectorworks, Qlab, and LightWright.
• Familiarity with a broad base of theatrical suppliers in Chicago and nationwide.
• Knowledge of theatrical rigging practices to ensure safety.
• Ability to muti-task.
• Creative problem solving and assessment.
• Superior resource management and budgeting acumen.
• Ability to instruct students during the production process.
Minimum Experience Required: 5 years professional theater or academic theater setting.
Education Requirements: BA in Theater or related field. MFA in Stage Design, Technical Theater, or related field preferred.
