Job Description

The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the distinguished acting conservatory founded in 1884 and accredited by MSCHE and NAST, is currently accepting applications for part-time Associate Faculty in the Professional Actor Training Program at its New York campus. With regional and national accreditations, the Academy seeks to attract a professionally active, ethnically diverse faculty and invites applications from candidates in the following areas:

Part-time teaching and directing positions at its New York campus in the following disciplines:

• Acting
• Movement
• Vocal Production / Singing Technique
• Voice & Speech

Required Experience:

Acting:
The Academy invites applicants with a strong foundation in such training approaches as Meisner, Hagen, Adler, and Strasberg. Specific duties include teaching introductory to intermediate acting. A collaborative spirit and a willingness to hone pedagogy with other instructors are necessary. A successful record of teaching at the conservatory and/or college level for at least three years is required. An MFA in Acting or Directing, and/or significant professional performance and teaching experience also required. Ability to teach Acting for Camera courses a plus.

Movement:
The Academy invites applicants with a strong background in physical use and body awareness practices. Actor-centered techniques that emphasize breath, experiential anatomy and kinesiology, and release work are preferred. Of particular interest are those with training and/or certification in Swings Technique, Feldenkrais or Alexander, Body-Mind Centering, and Neutral Mask. Specific duties include teaching introductory to intermediate movement for the actor courses. A collaborative spirit and a willingness to hone pedagogy with other instructors are necessary. MA or MFA and/or significant professional performance and teaching experience also required.

Voice & Speech:
The Academy invites applicants with a strong background in contemporary vocal pedagogies. Specific duties include teaching introductory to intermediate voice and speech; experiential anatomy and physiology; the International Phonetic Alphabet; text and language; accents and dialects. Certification in Fitzmaurice, Linklater, or Rodenberg as well as Alexander Technique and Knight-Thompson Speechwork a plus. Candidates must have a strong interest in personal pedagogical development, reflective practice, and collaboration toward curriculum development. MA or MFA and/or significant professional performance and teaching experience also required.

Vocal Production/Singing Technique:
The Academy invites applicants with a strong foundation in vocal pedagogy, musical theatre styles & repertoire, and acting technique (Meisner, Hagen, Adler, and Strasberg preferred). Specific duties include teaching introductory singing courses, often working with students who have never sung before. A collaborative spirit, willingness to meet students where they are vocally and musically, and the desire to guide students in bringing truthful stories to life through song is required. Must have excellent piano skills and be able accompany his/her own classes. MM, MFA, MA and/or significant professional performance and teaching experience also required. Teaching experience working in a conservatory/post-secondary environment is required; previous experience teaching actors to sing is preferred.
