Job Description

Operations Manager – Events

Ampa Events, an event production company and scene shop, is seeking a full-time, year-round, management level operations manager to work in our Richmond, VA office. Candidate will provide leadership as a Senior Production Manager with the execution of events and will lead our operations team and efficiently manage the general operations of our company as we position for future growth.

A successful candidate will have a diverse skill set with multiple theatrical skills including Carpentry, Lighting, AV, Rigging, as well as HR skill. The ability to wear multiple hats and change gears smoothly as operations require is essential. Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule, including frequent nights and weekends to accommodate our event schedule. Our busy season typically encompasses the months of April-June and October-December.

Ideal candidate will have 5-10 years experience in theatre, events, catering, or related hospitality industries. If you have held management positions with similar job titles such as: Technical Director, Director of Operations, Creative Director, AV Manager, or Stage Manager and have a diverse skill set, you may be well-suited for this position.


-Facilitate efficient use of staff and materials as needed for event schedule and other tasks.
-Lead and participate in preproduction review process – oversee preproduction planning and anticipating production needs.
-Effectively communicate work assignments and expectations to operations team.
-Actively oversee event production and manage event crew to execute on-time installations.
-Lead inventory efforts; assist and work with inventory associates to effectively track and maintain a 30,000 sq. ft. warehouse.
-Set up and operate general AV systems as needed.
-Develop standard operating procedures as appropriate
-Lead by example and ensure staff compliance with safety standards and standard operating procedures to facilitate safe and effective use of sets, scenery, and support gear.
-Train and develop staff on all aspects of job responsibilities.

-Excellent interpersonal communication skills – good with people and able to interact positively with clients on site.
-Critical thinker, problem solver, self-starter – able to work individually or as part of a team.
-Ability to rapidly change gears and adapt to client orders.
-Comfortable juggling multiple projects and able to improvise.
-Carpentry skills – construction and installation of scenery; working with wood, foam, fiberglass, plastics, and other materials.
-Lighting – Rigging skills and installation of theatrical lighting for corporate stage applications as well as decorative theme designs, including hanging, focusing, and circuiting of lighting equipment.
-Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
-Good driving record. Able to drive small box trucks and pull utility trailers.
-General office skills – computer savvy. Mac skills preferred.

Not required, but desirable skills:

-Artistic skills – painting, craft skills
– Prop design and fabrication
