About Our Culture

Hattiloo Theatre is a black repertory professional theater in Memphis, Tennessee, whose mission is to celebrate the contributions that Blacks have made to our nation’s cultural canon by producing plays by Black playwrights and/or showcasing the talents of Black performers in non-Black works. We believe that understanding and valuing cultural diversity are the keys to countering racism. Hattiloo is searching for an extraordinary individual who has a passion for the arts and a mind for business. The Managing Director will direct a team of twenty staff, interns, and contractors to ensure the organization has the solid structural foundation necessary to realize its position on the national stage.

The Managing Director is a key strategic and operational partner with the Founder/CEO and other organizational leadership with minimal supervision under broad direction.
This role provides organizational leadership and manages all Hattiloo staff, interns, and consultants under the guidance of the CEO. The Managing Director will have a proven track record of strategic leadership and alignment of resources to achieve organizational goals. The Managing Director has exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with an ability to clearly define issues and make tough decisions in the face of tight timelines and financial resources, ambiguity and competing priorities. The Managing Director will possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to work independently, lead multiple projects, prioritize and manage a high volume of activities. With a demonstrated ability to develop innovative ideas and effectively implement them, the Managing Director will be committed to strong internal and external working relationships with all Hattiloo family.

Qualities, Attributes, and Requirements of the Ideal Candidate

Proficiency in finance & business management; budgeting, analysis, and fiscal best practices
Understands the value of telling the story through numbers
Possesses a take-charge, project management work ethic
Has a proven ability to lead others
Working knowledge of Excel and QuickBooks
Ability to work with and a compassion for artists, creatives, and performers
Appreciation for and familiarity with CRM database management
Organized, efficient, and driven
Adaptable and flexible mindset
Career-minded, experienced analytical thinker
Emotionally Intelligent, leads with compassion and integrity
Commitment to Black repertory theater & performing arts
Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or certification in Arts Management required

Essential Job Functions

Leadership
Maintains a culture based on Hattiloo’s mission, vision, and values
Consistently demonstrates commitment to ethical, integrity-based leadership
Fosters collaboration and builds trust with all stakeholders – CEO, Board, committees, patrons, volunteers, staff, interns, and community investors

Finance & Operations
Safeguards Hattiloo’s financial health and reports financial results to the CEO and Board in a timely manner
Keeps all business reporting up-to-date and filed per government and NFP regulations
Follows best-practices and human resource laws as pertains to the management of staff & interns
Ensures that up-to-date business plans and projections exist for all Hattiloo projects and services; makes certain people operate in accordance with their respective business plans
Oversees development, fundraising, and grant efforts for Hattiloo Theatre
Recommends new programs/services and modification or discontinuance of current programs/services, as appropriate

Talent Management
Ensures that the departments are staffed appropriately within the financial forecasts
Identifies opportunities for employee growth and training; leads the efforts to ensure that the work environment allows the staff to perform, thrive and succeed
Develops a talent strategy that is purpose driven, principles based, and performance oriented
Selects, builds, manages, and leads high performing, results oriented team members
Sets clear performance standards and expectations
Effectively delegates responsibilities
