Job Description

Position Status: Full-time, exempt
Reports to: Board of Directors
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience ($65-$75K, possible additional incentivized pay)
Start Date: Early 2018

Phamaly Theatre Company is seeking a dynamic and experienced Managing Director to lead the organization through its next phase of growth. Phamaly is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to inspire people to re-envision disability through professional theatre. The Managing Director is the chief operating officer of the theatre, reporting to Phamaly’s Board of Directors. Working with Phamaly’s Artistic Director and Staff, the Managing Director is responsible for ensuring consistent achievement of Phamaly’s mission, financial objectives, development plans, community leadership, and program administration.

The Managing Director oversees all Development and Marketing activities of the Phamaly organization to ensure that fundraising, programming, marketing, and financial goals are aligned for success and growth. The Managing Director reports to the Phamaly Board of Directors and is entrusted to promote successful operations, foster positive morale among staff and program participants and maintain Phamaly’s strong standing in the community. The Managing Director shares leadership responsibility with the Artistic Director to ensure program excellence, operational integrity and sustainability. The Managing Director and Artistic Director together present the public face of Phamaly Theatre Company, advancing the relationship between Phamaly and various local, regional and national organizations, including government agencies and advocacy groups, community and local business groups, foundations and arts organizations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

–Nurture the organization’s mission, working with the Board and Artistic Director to create long-range strategic plans, set goals to achieve the vision of the organization, and establish the organizational strategy to accomplish those goals
–Assist the Board in the development of current and long-term organizational goals, objectives, policies and procedures
–Hire, manage, and evaluate staff members
–Work in partnership with the Board of Directors to recommend new Board member candidates, serve as a liaison between the organization and Board, and help guide the Board’s activities
–Serve as a community representative of Phamaly by attending events and programs related to job functions (such as foundation events, community events, etc.) as needed
–Work in partnership with the Artistic Director to develop and achieve Phamaly’s program goals
–Create community partnerships with individuals and businesses to benefit Phamaly’s standing in the community, create funding opportunities, and identify strategic opportunities

–Develop an annual Development Plan with initiatives that support strategic goals
–Grow Phamaly’s annual fund donations and major donor base
–Enhance and implement donor relations strategies, including major donor receptions and functions
–Maintain Phamaly’s donor database, donor tracking, and communications with donors
–Monitor Phamaly’s endowment fund
–Develop and promote the planned giving program
–Oversee and/or conduct all grant writing to ensure strong brand standards, accuracy, and appropriate representation of Phamaly to grant funders
–With the Marketing Manager, conceptualize and implement fundraising events and activities

–Work with Director of Production and Operations to manage day-to-day office operations
Maintain and report on revenue and expenditures against the Board-approved budget on a monthly basis
–Command the fiscal health of the organization including financial analysis; maintaining and enforcing financial controls
–With the Board’s Finance Committee, Artistic Director, and Director of Production and Operations, develop an annual operating budget for Board approval
–With Board Finance Committee, manage workers comp and liability insurance policies
–Assist in the execution of an annual independent audit
–In partnership with the Board Chairperson, ensure that all Board members are notified and reminded of meeting and event schedules
–Prepare a staff report and Board packet materials for distribution at least one week in advance of all Board meetings
–Participate in Board committee meetings and provide guidance and support to Board members as needed
–With the Artistic Director and Director of Production and Operations, manage organizational memberships (i.e., Colorado Nonprofit Association, Colorado Theatre Guild), including identifying additional organizations where Phamaly membership would be beneficial

–Maintain Phamaly brand standards
–Oversee the development of an annual Marketing Plan with initiatives that support strategic goals
–Oversee all print and electronic communications to ensure strong brand standards, accuracy, and appropriate representation of Phamaly to the community
–Assist Artistic Director and Marketing Manager to conceptualize marketing pieces, imagery, and branding that properly represents Phamaly and season show titles and themes
–Set ticket prices for events and recommend and oversee box office and ticketing strategies
–Manage Phamaly’s part-time office contractors (i.e. Sales Manager) to generate new potential leads for ticket sales, playbill advertisers, and subscribers

–Support the Artistic Director in developing artistic, educational and outreach programming for Phamaly, consistent with the organization’s mission and administrative and financial capacities
–Ensure that proper evaluation of programs is being completed by Artistic Director and Production Manager, particularly in relation to grant and funding needs
–Confirm the effective management and evaluation of Phamaly’s volunteer base
–Direct the promotion of outreach and touring productions to community groups, businesses, schools, and civic organizations to maximize income and provide exposure

Minimum Job Requirements

–Bachelor’s Degree in business, theatre, arts management, or equivalent experience
–5+ year’s experience in non-profit organization management, fundraising and program development, or theatre management
–Knowledge of theatre and arts organizations
–Understanding of non-profit finances and the ability to develop and manage an annual budget exceeding $700,000
–Knowledge of marketing tactics, planning and execution to meet performance objectives
–Community contacts and relationships and the ability to create strategic partnerships
–Strong interpersonal and communication skills, leadership skills and ability to collaborate with others
–Management experience with small teams

Desirable, But Not Essential:

–MBA or other graduate degree in Arts Management or similar
–Experience with grant writing and foundation management
–Experience in working with non-profit Boards to meet strategic goals
–Knowledge of the disability community
–Successful execution of endowment development
