The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in a rigorous undergraduate K-12 theatre teacher education program. This non-tenure track, nine-month appointment offers full benefits, competitive salary and renewable contract. Appointment begins September 1, 2017. The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of a robust BFA degree program, with emphases on teaching undergraduate courses in drama and theatre education, as well as licensure for teachers of theatre. We seek applicants who pursue academic excellence through diversity at all levels of theatre and are committed to fostering an environment in which faculty, staff and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.
As a faculty member, this individual will contribute to mentoring, advising and recruiting students — including those from underrepresented backgrounds — through coursework and service focused on the following areas: K-12 theatre program/curriculum development; creative drama; elementary or secondary school teaching methods; assessment and evaluation in theatre/drama education; culturally responsive theatre for young audiences; placement and supervision of student teachers; directing the young performer; theatre education student colloquia; and independent study projects. Candidates may also have opportunities to collaborate in our MFA and BA programs in Drama/Theatre for Youth & Communities (DTYC).
Candidates must have an MA or terminal degree in theatre education or a related area. Strong candidates will have experience in pre-college drama/theatre education; a demonstrated knowledge of contemporary elementary and secondary education drama/theatre best practices and principles; and a record of three years of full-time K-12 theatre teaching and production experience, including directing and/or technical skills in theatre production with young people. We seek applicants with university teaching experience and a demonstrated knowledge of delivering culturally diverse and responsive pedagogy and production. Experience with Latinx and/or African American theatre for young audiences or work with ELL learners is desired. Additional specialty in theatre, drama education and movement will be considered.
Candidates who are active in Texas and/or national organizations related to theatre education and/or have experience placing and supervising student teachers or student directors are preferred. Also preferred are those experienced with national and/or Texas state standards and licensure requirements, as well as University Interscholastic League and One-Act Play Contest.
