• THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN
The University of New Haven invites applications and nominations for the position of Full-Time Illustration/Fine Arts Faculty (non-tenure track) at Lyme Academy College of the Fine Arts (LYME) to begin in the Fall of 2018.
LYME is one of five colleges of the University of New Haven, a private, comprehensive university which enrolls 6800 students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Located in the village of Old Lyme on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River, LYME/UNH is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. In addition to their course work in one of LYME’s four B.F.A. programs (Illustration, Drawing, Painting and Sculpture) students at LYME take advantage of course offerings and study abroad available to all UNH students.
LYME’s Illustration curriculum emphasizes a strong studio grounding in drawing, painting and sculpture in the first year of study and progresses, against the backdrop of on-going and broad-based liberal arts study, toward advanced artistic learning through integrative and critical approaches offered in upper level, studio-based course work. In addition to traditional media, Lyme’s programs also incorporate new and emerging platforms of communication and artistic expression. In keeping with UNH’s leadership in experiential learning, Lyme prioritizes the kind of flexible and expansive capabilities its students will need to demonstrate in order to be able to flourish after graduation in the worlds of art, intellect and commerce where these platforms rapidly evolve.
In addition to teaching 9 credits (typically three 3-credit courses) per semester, the FT Illustration/Fine Arts faculty member will be expected to work closely with the B.F.A. Programs Chair and the coordinators of the programs in Painting, Drawing and Sculpture in the area of curricular assessment and development, as well as to participate fully in student advising, committee work, various departmental activities and student reviews.
An ideal candidate will hold an M.F.A. degree and be an artist/educator with both professional experience in the field of illustration and demonstrable capability in the practice of drawing, sculpture and/or painting as a fine art. In consequence of such abilities, the ideal candidate will be qualified to teach a variety of courses within multiple of LYME’s B.F.A. programs. The successful candidate will also be capable of articulating a set of program goals that reflect both the requirements of the professional practice of illustration and the broad purposes of college-level learning; he/she will also be able to outline the steps (both educational and administrative) necessary to meet these goals. Further, an ideal candidate will be able to function as a good colleague and an enthusiastic mentor, assisting students in preparation for post-graduate experience. Finally, the successful candidate will be able to broaden the Illustration program’s profile in the field.
Required application materials. The following in a single, compressed PDF file that does not exceed 5 MB: Letter of application; CV; statement of teaching philosophy and/or sample syllabi of recent courses taught; 25 labeled images of original illustration/art work; and 15 images of student work (if available).
