The MFA program in Curatorial Practice of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for Graduate Program Director, a full-time faculty position with administrative responsibilities and a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning Fall 2016.
Graduate Studies at MICA seeks a high-profile candidate with significant professional experience in curatorial practice, curatorial studies or related areas to serve as director of the Curatorial Practice graduate program. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to develop a strategic vision and set the direction for this innovative, practice-based MFA. The director will assume the administrative responsibilities of the graduate program, including the oversight of curriculum and academic programming, the ongoing development of external partnerships, faculty mentoring, student advising, assessment and budget management.
The MFA in Curatorial Practice seeks candidates with a global perspective who are committed to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the field. Ideal candidates will be open to exploring innovative ways to craft curricula, experiences and projects that empower students to contribute to re-thinking the future and function of curatorship. Candidates should be able to synthesize the theoretical, historical, social and experimental dimensions of curating and their relevance to other art and design practices. The candidate should have experience contributing to the development of student-centered programs and integrating pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender and class and their intersections. The candidate should be conversant with trans-disciplinary topics/themes/methods that are relevant to the field and should have familiarity with new technologies, media, and emerging subject areas that contribute to the ways curators engage and sustain audiences.
The graduate director will teach 9 credits each semester and supervise the program and graduate and undergraduate concentrations in curating. The candidate must demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of contemporary issues in curating and an active knowledge and interest in teaching and practicing curatorship and promoting critical engagement with issues of race, class, gender and structural inequity.
This long-term, renewable position is expected to participate in the life of Graduate Studies and the College through cross-programmatic collaboration, committee work, graduate admissions, community engagement, and other institution-related duties. All full-time faculty at MICA are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the College.
The position reports to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies.
• MA, MFA, or PhD degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Distinguished professional career as a curator.
• Ability to collaborative with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, education levels and degrees of professional training.
• Experience teaching at graduate and/or undergraduate levels.
• Experience with academic program management or other administrative responsibilities.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Candidate must successfully complete a full background check
Valued, but not required:
• Three years of teaching experience.
• Experience with curriculum development and assessment.
• Demonstrated ease with networking, writing, publishing, and presentation.
• Work with English Language Learners.
