Full-Time Executive Director
Maui Onstage at the Historic Iao Theater is actively searching for a new Executive Director. We are looking for a proven business professional who enjoys working with creative people and driving success which impacts an entire community. Maui OnStage has been in an exciting growth phase for the past several years and we are looking to hire a strong, visionary leader to drive the next decade of success.
The Executive Director is responsible for engaging our community, donors and volunteers in promoting and delivering quality theater and programs that support the mission and core values of Maui OnStage (MOS) while ensuring financial stability and continued growth of the organization. This is a hands-on full-time position with benefits with primary responsibilities of fundraising, business development and delivering on the strategic plan and vision to support the continued growth of MOS
The Executive Director is the chief spokesperson for MOS, representing the organization to its many internal and external communities. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will direct and oversee all functions of MOS as well as manage the staff.
Maui OnStage main programming consists of:
-Producing a theater season of five multi-weekend performances, creating over 60 diverse events which create rewarding experiences to our community
-Producing the Annual Maui Fringe Theater Festival, creating unique theater experiences for our audiences and artists
-Producing the monthly play reading “ONO” (One Night Only) series, which allows lesser know works of theater to be presented to our community. ONO also provides opportunities for new works and locally written plays and screenplays to be read for public feedback.
-Providing community events that are affordable and accessible to all such as our annual Halloween event, free film screenings, co-productions, annual Easter Egg hunt and partnerships with the Maui Chamber Orchestra.
-Providing a minimum of two Youth Theater Workshop experiences each year, casting all youth in a fully supported production. Students enrolled perform in the production while also learning technical aspects such as lighting, set design, costume design and sound.
-In addition to these main components, partnering with the County of Maui, Maui Onstage operates as the custodian for our 190 year old historic Iao theater. The theater seats 400+ audience members.
Maui OffStage is an off site space where youth/adult classes and rehearsals are held.
Responsibilities and Duties
Directly supervises staff and creates an overall business environment that is results-oriented, supportive and responsive to the needs and expectations of a diverse constituency.
Financial Management / Business Management
Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Maui OnStage, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization
Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
Develops and review staff talents and needs
Hires, supervises and evaluates key technical personnel, including Production Manager and Technical Director.
Creates a strong sense of community and supports the staff in creative pursuits while building accountability through clear expectations and regular program and performance reviews
The Executive Director plays the lead role in fundraising initiatives and is the chief spokesperson for the organization. In collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is expected to set development goals based on budget needs and meet those goals.
Cultivate existing donors while developing new donor relationships
Oversee the health of the membership program
Pursue opportunities and supervise writing and submission of grants
Grant management and reporting
Assess, refresh and develop strategy for annual fundraising activities
Manage one primary fundraiser (Sneak Peek-kickoff to the annual campaign) per year
Identify and secure potential sponsorships
Assess and refresh appropriate sponsorship materials
Work closely with the Board to facilitate Officer, Board, Committee functioning.
Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions
Oversee and update the strategic plan in conjunction with the board
Provide data and resources to support the implementation of committee activities
Advocate and articulate the mission of the Maui Onstage and the importance of the arts in our community.
Responsible for the enhancement of Maui OnStage and its image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations
Serve on appropriate community boards and develop relationships with partner non-profits
Support staff and provide leadership and vision in outreach and programmatic initiatives.
Create a focused marketing strategy to attract and serve targeted audiences to grow awareness and attendance
Work with the board marketing committee to ensure a well executed marketing plan
Review programmatic initiatives with the respective staff members on a regular basis
Oversee and reports on the finances of the education programs
Review financial outcomes and attendance models of programming and help lead strategic direction based on mission focus and numbers
Qualifications and Skills:
With a dynamic team of creatives to support and drive programming, the Executive Director needs to bring a strong business mindset with a deep appreciation for the arts, fundraising experience, managerial skills, financial management capabilities and a track record of advocating for and growing community support and brand awareness.
Five or more years of leadership experience, nonprofit preferred but not necessary
A Bachelor’s degree is preferred
A deep appreciation for the arts and creative thinking; in all forms
Solid budget management skills, including: budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
Strong organizational abilities including: planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
A proven track record of success in fundraising and resource development
Transparent and high integrity leadership
Demonstrated ability to inspire and empower individuals
Experience with community relations, marketing and public relations
Strong written and oral communication skills
