Job Description

The University of Pennsylvania Glee Club is seeking a Director. As Penn’s oldest student performing arts group, Glee Club is a treasured University tradition lasting 153 years. The Director plays an integral role in the creative and administrative success of the organization. Platt Student Performing Arts House and Glee Club leadership are seeking an innovative and experienced vocal ensemble director with motivation to lead the Club into its next chapter. The historic University of Pennsylvania Glee Club is a prestigious brotherhood of performers that shares its unique blend of musicality, showmanship, and charm with diverse audiences both near and far. For over 150 years, we have brought communities together, serving as musical ambassadors from the University to the world. As one of the oldest collegiate choruses in the nation, the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club is a unique performing arts group with a spectacular blend of beautiful musical repertoire and outstanding productions.

Founded in 1862, The University of Pennsylvania Glee Club is the oldest student performing arts group at Penn. Its rich musical history and timeless performance aesthetic makes the Glee Club a treasured tradition for the University. Performing on campus and throughout the world, the Glee Club is the University’s premier musical ambassador. The ensemble is made up of roughly sixty singers, instrumentalists, and technical staff. Student and alumni boards govern the Glee Club under the auspices of Platt Student Performing Arts House. In accordance with the mission of the organization and in collaboration with the governing boards, the Director is responsible for the Glee Club’s creative endeavors.

The responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to:
• Establish (with the advice of the Glee Club Board of Governors and the Glee Club Graduate Club Board) the artistic vision for the organization
• Ensure student members experience engaging and enjoyable rehearsals and performances
• Provide student members with opportunities to learn and perform a wide range of musical genres
• Inspire and lead musicians to deliver creative performances, guiding them through musical scores with special attention to musicality, tone, tempo, phrasing, dynamics, and other musical elements, such that musicians leave the Penn Glee Club as improved performers
• Ensure musical scores are purchased, arranged, and/or composed in a timely manner
• Maintain productive, organized, and well-planned rehearsals throughout the year
• In tandem with the Board, select and work with a designated student conductor
• Conduct the Glee Club for on- and off-campus performances, unless otherwise decided with the student conductor and undergraduate Board
• Direct the activities of the group—in collaboration with Club leadership—such as auditioning new members, selecting repertoire, preparing for performances, and coordinating rehearsals
• Establish and develop meaningful relationships with the University of Pennsylvania community and beyond, maintaining the group’s reputation as musical ambassadors of the university
• Establish and develop meaningful relationships with the University of Pennsylvania community and beyond
• Ensure the sense of brotherhood among Glee Club members remains at all times; this includes serving as an advisor to the members of the Glee Club
• Participate in Glee Club Graduate Club Board meetings and maintain an appropriate relationship and level of outreach with the alumni
• Lead and uphold all Glee Club traditions, including, but not limited to, elections, new member induction, retreats, and social gatherings
• Hold a minimum of 5 weekly office hours (to be posted) at a convenient time for members of the Glee Club and the student board
• Conduct him/herself in a professional manner at all official Club events

The successful candidate will meet the following expectations:
• At least 5 years of experience leading vocal ensembles
• Knowledge and ability to teach a wide variety of musical genres and styles
• Willingness to work cooperatively with production directors, Platt Student Performing Arts House staff, and University leadership
• Effective interpersonal communication skills
• Good organizational skills
• Experience working in a University setting
• Higher Education in Music (or equivalent experience)

Details of the Position:
• Position reports to Director of Platt Student Performing Arts House, but is also responsible to the Glee Club student and alumni boards
• 10-month contracted employee of The University of Pennsylvania Glee Club
• Average 10-15 hours per week, including at least five hours at rehearsals
• Affiliated staff of The University of Pennsylvania
• Salary range: $13,000-$15,000 per year
• No parking or travel expenses provided
