Job Description

Title: Director of Operations
Reports to: President/CEO
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Hours: Full-time, exempt. Evening and weekend hours will be required.

Organization Background

The Charleston Gaillard Center is a 1,800-seat performance hall located in Charleston, South Carolina. The newly constructed facility also contains 16,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting space, along with office and public spaces. The Charleston Gaillard Management Corporation is a non-profit 501c3 organization responsible for managing the facility.

Position Summary

The Charleston Gaillard Management Corporation is seeking a Director of Operations who will be charged with the primary responsibility for designing and implementing the organization’s operational plan, and supporting the five-year strategic planning process. This position is responsible for the planning, execution, control, and evaluation of event execution and facility operations for the organization.

The Director of Operations works closely with the President/CEO, CFO, and senior management, as well as the City of Charleston and the Charleston Gaillard Center’s production, technical and facility staff to enhance and support the overall mission of the organization, and to ensure high quality event execution while also maintaining the safety and maintenance of the facility.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and manages the annual operations department budget.
• Oversees facility capital purchases of stage and facility equipment and
furniture/fixtures.
• Manages the staff responsible for the successful execution of venue rentals and
presented events in ballrooms, meeting spaces, and the performance hall,
including contract and technical rider fulfillment.
• Supervises the preparation of related financial reports and necessary
documentation on the economic performance of events.
• Develops strategies for controlling production and technical event costs while
maintaining quality and safety.
• Coordinates all facility and operational requirements with the City of Charleston.
• Monitors operational code compliance, licensing and permitting.
• Administers facility, maintenance, janitorial and security contracts with outside
vendors.
• Prepares and maintains the Gaillard Center’s Emergency Operations Plan as well as
occupational safety guidelines and training for production and technical staff.
• Serves as the point of contact for collective bargaining contract negotiations and
compliance.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a proven and measurable track record of 6-10 years of progressively responsible positions in full facility venue operations, with exposure to both front of house and technical responsibilities and budgets. The majority of experience must be in a performing arts environment. Experience must include management of a staff of a minimum of five or more employees. Candidates should have experience in operational budget administration, especially with respect to event execution, and experience working with employees under a collective bargaining agreement.

Candidates should be proficient in MS Word and Excel, have superior organizational skills, and written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated leadership, as well as the ability to think strategically, work well under pressure, and manage details of several concurrent projects is required. A minimum of a four year degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. The successful candidate will have a professional business demeanor and the ability to work a flexible, event driven work schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include experience working in a non-profit organization. Knowledge of the Charleston area is a plus. Experience with specific facility management software, event execution software and task management software is desirable.

Salary is commensurate on experience. The position includes a full benefit package, including health insurance and 401k.
