Job Description

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is seeking a dynamic and innovative dean to lead its College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media (CFAM).

CFAM is comprised of three distinct schools, and radio and television operations. The units are spread across six different facilities. The School of the Arts, School of Communication and the School of Music are made up of nationally known faculty that teach, mentor and inspire students’ individual development with one-on-one instruction and hands-on learning experiences in small class settings.

The dean is the chief executive officer of the college, providing academic and budgetary leadership to a diverse group of faculty and professional staff. He, she or ze will work with a variety of external constituents, including supporters, donors and community partners. The dean reports directly to the senior vice chancellor of academic affairs, and, working with the faculty, will provide strategic direction for the college.

He, she or ze should have an understanding of today’s academic challenges, the role of global education, the importance of diversity and inclusion, familiarity with the arts and a demonstrated history of working in a shared governance environment. The dean represents the college and serves as its chief spokesperson.

One of the four campuses of the University of Nebraska system, UNO is the state’s metropolitan institution. Located in the heart of the state’s largest metropolitan region, UNO is committed to the educational, research and cultural development of its urban community.

The College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media serves over 1,100 majors. The dean is responsible for the leadership and overall direction of teaching, creative/scholarly activity, and professional and community engagement of the college.

Qualified candidates must possess an earned doctorate or terminal degree; full-time faculty experience; progressive academic administrative experience at the department level or higher; and a distinguished record of teaching, creative/scholarly activities and service to qualify for senior rank and tenure in one of the college’s schools. The successful candidate must also be an effective communicator with a demonstrated commitment to shared governance and a willingness to promote, enhance and support external funding for the college.

Candidates should also have a track record of multidisciplinary work and advocacy for the crucial role of the arts within the university experience. Desirable attributes include experience in a metropolitan environment, experience in program and personnel management, budget management, active involvement with professional and community engagement.

A complete application will include a letter describing relevant experiences and interest in the position; current curriculum vitae; and the names of five references with titles, mailing addresses, business/home telephone numbers and email addresses. References will only be contacted after first round interviews. Individuals who wish to nominate a candidate should submit a letter of nomination, including the name, position, address, telephone number and email address of the nominee.
