Job Description

The Thoma Art Foundation is seeking a full time Collections Manager and Communications Coordinator for our Chicago location to manage the activities (all shipping, receiving, handling,) preservation of the art collection along with managing our social media and communications. This position requires extensive experience and confidence in managing all aspects of shipping and handling art. Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years prior experience working in a museum, gallery or with a private collection.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Solely responsible for shipping and receiving art for all loans and from auction houses
• Overseeing the handling and hanging of collection to include scheduling art handlers, creating work orders, supervising art handlers and providing all documentation of process
• Oversee the framing, conservation and cleaning of art
• Maintaining artist files and database
• Maintaining crate lists and dimensions
• Securing high resolution images from galleries, auction houses or arranging photography of art
• Ordering art books, maintaining the library and organizing catalogs
• Researching artists and acquiring condition reports
• Scanning articles and reviews on art works
• Ordering necessary equipment and supplies
• Creating rack guides
• Managing and keeping the art storage facility organized and inventoried
• Oversee the development and execution of communications for art foundation’s ambitious programs for grants and fellowships, loans of artwork, public programs and initiatives that advance development of designated fields of art
• Coordinate a proactive outreach program to curators, faculty, cultural institutions and artists to gain awareness of the foundation’s activities and the initiatives we fund
• Update website content when needed
• Manage social media postings (Facebook and Twitter)
• Keep the website content current and manage all updates

Qualifications

• MFA is preferred
• Prior experience working in a gallery or with a museum is a must.
• Extensive prior experience shipping and handling art
• Superior writing and verbal skills
• Resourceful: this individual must be able to execute tasks efficiently and accurately with little direction
• Highly organized with acute attention to details (for use when documenting, shipping, reviewing condition reports, etc.)
• Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks efficiently
• Professional demeanor as there will be opportunities to represent the family and their art foundation
• Experience with digital media, modern & contemporary, Spanish colonial and bamboo baskets
