The College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication is seeking an experienced Audio Engineer/Technician with clearly defined artistic sensibilities.
The successful candidate should have a Bachelor of Arts or Fine Arts or an equivalent combination of appropriate education and professional experience. Experience should ideally include, studio recording, live concert mixing, and Musical Theater. A graduate degree in Fine Arts and expertise in sound design is desirable, but not required.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Supervise and coordinate all aspects of the audio needs for all events in the Sam Houston State University performance venues. Support the artistic vision of directors, conductors, choreographers, and designers as it relates to the advancement, budgeting, and realization of audio designs and recordings.
Primary Responsibilities
Produce, supervise, coordinate, and maintain all aspects of the audio needs for all events in the SHSU performance venues. Produce high quality audio recordings of rehearsals and concerts. Mix live audio feeds for musical theater, concerts, and guest speakers. Manage equipment budget, purchasing, maintenance, and repairs. Participate in rehearsals to develop the ideal acoustic environment for recordings and performances. Provide oversight, expertise, and leadership for the audio needs of the departments in the performing arts and the Performing Arts Center. Responsible for live audio engineering, sound design, recordings, and duplication as needed. Hire, train, and provide supervision to student employees. Participate in production planning as it relates to the execution of the audio for each event. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Comprehensive knowledge of microphones and related applications is essential. Full understanding and appreciation of the acoustics and dynamic ranges associated with classical concert recordings. Must possess exceptional computer skills with ability to work in both Mac and PC; working knowledge of digital and analog mixing boards such as the Midas Siena, Midas Venice and Yamaha M7CL; and working knowledge of audio software such as SFX, Q-lab, Pro-Tools and Soundtrack Pro. Consistently demonstrate a high level of communication skills, creativity, flexibility, and problem solving abilities. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment. Regular contacts with university staff, faculty, students, and outside groups. Possibly teach audio engineering and sound design as needed.
Salary Range: $3,128 – $4,339 per month
