The USC School of Dramatic Arts is unveiling a brand-new professional degree in contemporary musical theatre, which will welcome its first cohort in Fall 2019. Taking advantage of the unparalleled resources and faculty of the School’s prestigious partner arts schools at USC, including the USC Thornton School of Music and the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, this degree will offer singular opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity.
The USC School of Dramatic Arts is seeking applicants for an open rank non-tenure track faculty position in musical theatre at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, depending on experience and current rank. The position will serve as the Head of Musical Theatre, overseeing the new BFA in Contemporary Musical Theatre as well as existing undergraduate Musical Theatre curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. The position will start Fall 2018.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a wide knowledge of historical and contemporary musical theatre practice and a strong understanding of the current professional landscape, both in Los Angeles, New York and nationally, on stage and on screen. Candidates will have experience as teacher/mentor and director, as well as demonstrate administrative skills and experience in recruiting. Candidates will present a network of professional connections and an understanding of different formats, from workshops to concert readings to full production, as well as an understanding of the business of acting and professional development for graduates.
The ideal candidate has 3-5 years academic teaching experience in performing arts, professional credits in musical theatre (Broadway or national tour preferred), and program administration skills in musical theatre. The preferred candidate has 5 or more years teaching in an academic setting, more than 5 years in the musical theatre profession, as well as specific experience creating/running a program in musical theatre in academic context.
