Internship Job Artist Assistant – Paid Internship
Artist building large earthwork/architectonic sculpture seeking summer Artist Assistant with a carpentry background for live/work position on a remote mesa 1 1/2 hours from Santa Fe, NM.

ROOM & BOARD + $600 monthly stipend are provided in exchange for assisting in on site art studio.
-Each Artist Assistant is provided with their own cabin on site.
-The project is “off the grid” except for a telephone line/DSL.
Time Frame: mid-June – end-October. (somewhat flexible)
– Experience in carpentry, use and knowledge of construction tools including circular saw, table saw, miter saw, other basic tools, and excellent finishing skills is a must. Knowledge of frame building is helpful.
– Experience in priming surfaces and painting.
– Experience with art handling and packing.
– Must be able to lift 50lbs.
– Must have a valid Driver’s License and own vehicle to bring on site. 4WD is highly recommended for the constantly fluctuating weather conditions, off-road environment and exploring New Mexico.
Computer skills including InDesign and Photoshop are optional, but a plus.
Also a plus are documentation skills including filming experience and video editing experience (Premiere Pro).
Artist Assistants do not work on the earthwork project, Star Axis. This position is to work in the studio on other artwork. AAs should be ready to work closely with the artist and seamlessly in a team with a lot of task changes day to day. They should be mature, flexible, independent, and interested in learning how a large earthwork is created (designed, organized, funded, and built), enthusiastic about learning new skills, detail oriented, and interested in spending time alone in a remote desert ranch location.
Assisting in detail-oriented building of to-scale models in wood, painting and preparing surfaces for a large installation, architectural drawings, and making supply runs for the studio and earthwork project.
We share cooking, pitching in to help keep common areas clean and organized, and supply runs into town for supplies and food.
Also, throughout the summer there are fundraising lunches that we host for patrons. Help planning, preparing, assisting on site visits, and generally making these lunches successful.
