JOB DESCRIPTION: Festival Dance and Performing Arts, in conjunction with the University of Idaho Dance Program, is seeking a Festival Dance Academy Instructor/University of Idaho Dance Program Adjunct Instructor. This position presents a unique opportunity for a professional in the dance field to work in both an academy setting and a collegiate dance program preparing future dancers and instructors for careers in the performing arts. Festival Dance has been providing quality dance instruction to area residents for over 30 years, and functions as a lab for university dance program students to observe and practice effective teaching strategies for all ages and movement disciplines. This position will be ideal for someone who specializes in ballet and pointe, and has enthusiastic interest in teaching dance to children, adolescents, and college level students. Additionally, Festival Dance’s presence on the University of Idaho campus presents ample opportunity for creative collaborations with departments and programs across campus and in the community.
As a multi-faceted non-profit organization in residence at the University of Idaho, Festival Dance’s mission is to provide access to quality arts education and programming through Festival Dance Academy (serving ages 4 to adult), our annual Great Performances series of professional touring events, and extensive outreach activities and collaborations with numerous community and university organizations. Festival Dance shares space with the University of Idaho Dance Program through a memorandum of agreement.
The University of Idaho Dance Program offers a four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Dance. UI Dance offers courses in all levels of ballet and modern, supplemented by courses in jazz, tap, hip hop, and world dance. UI Dance students have the opportunity to perform and participate in the production of two main-stage concerts each year and numerous student-produced concerts.
Facilities used by Festival Dance and UI Dance include two large studios, one of which converts to a 120-seat theatre for student concerts, the University of Idaho Administration Building Auditorium, and the University of Idaho Hartung Theatre for main-stage concerts.
For Festival Dance Academy: Candidate will provide approximately 10-12 hours per week of high-quality and safe instruction in ballet, pointe, and other technique courses to students enrolled in Festival Dance Academy classes. This will include developing choreography for the annual Spring Concert and other performances as necessary. Additionally, candidate will oversee Nutcracker auditions and performance (this is a touring production by Eugene Ballet), and will conduct weekend rehearsals in the fall every other year (2017 is an off year for Nutcracker). Candidate will be active in our outreach programs, including coordinating and teaching Discover Dance classes in area elementary schools. Academy administration duties will include attending meetings with Festival Dance Director and instructors, responding to parent inquiries, working with our administrative assistant on academy enrollment, scheduling/coordinating performances for academy students, coordinating and overseeing all other academy instructors in conjunction with the Festival Dance Director, and all other duties as assigned.
For UI Dance Program: Candidate will provide 8-9 hours per week of high-quality instruction in university-level ballet courses, plus modern and/or jazz technique, depending on interest and background. Candidate will be required to complete a comprehensive syllabus for each course taught, attend all required meetings, keep record of student attendance/assignments, uphold UI Dance policies and procedures, create a safe and positive learning environment, follow fair assessment practices, adhere to FERPA guidelines, and report grades.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION:

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate should have expertise and interest in teaching and choreographing for a variety of ages and skill levels in ballet, jazz, and Creative Dance. Background in additional movement disciplines is desired. Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts in Dance is preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered.
