The Quimby Colony, an artist-in-residence program set in a dynamic urban environment on the coast of Maine, is seeking a visionary and pragmatic leader to serve as its founding Executive Director.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be charged with building an effective, comprehensive, and integrated management system for the Quimby Colony. We welcome candidates who by their nature and experience have an eagerness to provide collaborative, non-hierarchical leadership and partnership with our motivated team.  The Executive Director will be the chief spokesperson for the Quimby Colony’s mission, vision, and values. Scope of responsibility will include fund development, long-range planning, artistic and programmatic administration in conjunction with the Artistic Directors, external and community relations, and overall operational, financial, and administrative supervision of the Colony.

  • The Executive Director works in tandem with the Board of Directors and staff to fulfill the mission of the Colony, administer day to day activities, and manage and grow the resources of the organization.
  • Program Management - The Executive Director is responsible for development, implementation, and oversight of all programs of the Colony and for evaluating the success of such programs.
  • Community Relations and Marketing - The Executive Director will be the primary representative for the Colony and will create opportunities for community partnerships in both marketing and publicity to promote awareness, interest and brand value of a creative economy.
  • Fund Development - The Executive Director will be the point person in securing and identifying new sources of income from grants, community outreach, and in-kind donations. S/he will work in tandem with the Board of Directors in soliciting sponsors, donors, and major gifts.
  • Finance and Budgeting - The Executive Director will create the annual budget and will supervise other staff to control expenses and optimize income.
  • Human Resources - The Executive Director will oversee and manage the human resources of the Colony, including staff selection, orientation, development, and annual evaluations. S/he will guide and advise all staff in the performance of their duties. 
  • Facilities – The Executive Director will maintain an accounting of the management of facilities.


Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills-both written and verbal
  • Experience in Board Development and Non-Profit Management preferred
  • Experience working with a volunteer work force
  • A graduate degree (e.g., M.A., M.S., Ph.D.) in arts management, arts education, art history, or another art-related field and at least five years non-profit arts management experience. Prior artist-in-residency experience is preferred.
  • Self Motivated with a Strong Work Ethic
  • Proficient in Word Applications, Power Point, and Publisher/Photoshop
  • Should possess a valid driver’s license and an appealing sense of humor.
